But inside, her stomach felt as sour as a pitcher of lemonade.
The Perkiomen Valley softball coach was helpless as she watched her team commit five errors - four of them coming during a two-inning stretch in which visiting St Pius X exploded for 11 runs.
The fielding lapses told the story in the Lions' 11-1, PAC-10 victory over the host Vikings. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
St. Pius scored eight runs on seven hits and two errors in the second frame, then followed that up with three more in a two-hit, two-error third inning.
PV starter Sam Pfister lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs.
"Those two innings were really bad," said Paulus. "They hit Sam, give them credit. But we still threw the ball away, didn't hit the cut-off person and didn't catch the ball. We didn't play well and we know it.
"There has been one other game that we played poorly, against Owen J. Roberts, but nothing like this. This is a team we can play with if we execute."
PV fell to 4-3, while St. Pius improved to 5-2.
The onslaught began in the top of the second with three straight singles, the last one coming off the bat of Megan McCarthy, scoring Marie Iwaniuk. Fist baseman Jess Killoran then stepped up and grounded a ball back to Pfister, who proceeded to drop the ball. Pfister tried to gun out the runner at home, but it was too late. Everyone was safe on the fielder's choice.
Pfister did get an out but then allowed an RBI single to pitcher Denise Haines. An infield error led to two more runs before Pfister recorded a second out.
But the damage continued on a two-run single by Iwaniuk. The inning was finished off by Brooke Wolfgang's second hit, scoring the eighth run. Another throwing error was committed on the play.
"We are missing two starters, but that is no excuse," Paulus continued. "I'm proud of the strides we've made so far. We only have two senior starters, but it's our pitcher and catcher. The rest of the field is occupied by (underclassmen). They took a step back today."
After St. Pius scored three more times against reliever Lindsey Metzler, PV tallied its only run of the game in the bottom of the third. It came, ironically enough, after two Lions' errors. Pam Buckwalter's RBI single then scored Shannon Aguido.
The Vikings managed only two hits off of Haines, the other one coming on a fourth inning leadoff single by Metzler.
