,UPPER MERION -- The best young baseball players in the state of Pennsylvania will gather this weekend at Heuser Park in King of Prussia for the Junior American Legion Pennsylvania State Championship, hosted by the Valley Forge Generals of the Montgomery County Junior American Legion Baseball League.
The tournament will kick off Saturday with the following matchups: Punxsutawney vs. Swoyersville, 10 a.m.; Shaler vs. Shillington, 1 p.m.; Spring City vs. Mill Creek, 4 p.m.; West Lawn vs. Valley Forge, 7 p.m.
The Generals automatically qualify for being the host of the tournament and will compete as the eighth and final team.
"The boys and I are very excited about this. We hosted a Junior Legion Regional two years ago and did really well there," said Generals coach Bill O'Toole. "We only wanted to host if our record was respectable, and it was, as we finished third in our league. The boys are excited. It will be a lot of fun knowing how good the other teams are in the state."
O'Toole said the opportunity to play in a state final is something his players could carry with them and help to push them throughout their baseball careers.
"This is an opportunity for these boys to come out and get looked at by their high schools and some colleges and show their skills," he said. "It'll be a great experience for them, having it under their belt, and they can carry it on forward as they move on through baseball."
