PHOENIXVILLE -- Phoenixville could not sustain a lead for the second straight game in falling to a tough Unionville squad, 23-9, in non-league football action at Washington Field Friday night.
The Phantoms led 9-7 with 10:34 left in the fourth quarter on the third of John McInally's three field goals, but the Indians finished strong to salvage the victory.
Phoenixville coach Bill Furlong thought the Phantoms showed improvement from last week's 27-21 overtime loss to Great Valley, but some breakdowns once again cost Phoenixville the contest.
"We played well for a long time, but then a couple breakdowns cost us," said Furlong.
Unionville took the opening kickoff and marched 67 yards in 12 plays with Mason Popham scoring ona 1-yard burst. Connor Grimes kicked the extra point for a quick 7-0 lead. But after that, Furlong thought it was pretty much of an even game.
Greg Carroll scored on a 7-yard run and tacked on the two-point conversion to give the Tribe a 15-9 lead with 6:10 remaining in regulation time. After the Phantoms gave the ball up on downs, Unionville quarterback Glades broke loose on a 42-yard scoring run with 3:17 showing. Carroll passed to Kevin Phillips for the two-point conversion and the final score.
Glades gained 96 yards on 14 carries while Carroll netted 31 yards on 10 tries and Popham 24 yards on six attempts. The Tribe gained 156 yards rushing on 33 carries and had no pass attempts all evening.
Phoenixville's Sam McQuiston rushed for 91 yards on 20 plays to highlight the Phantom offense. Quarterback Tom Romano completed 4 of 9 throws for 32 yards and rushed for 20 more yards.
McInally kicked a 32-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the first period. He hit a 30-yard fieldl goal with 7:53 left in the second period to make the score 7-6. McInally's 29-yard field goal came with 10:34 to go in the fourth period.
Phoenixville finished with 143 yards rushing on 46 carries and had 175 yards of total offense on 55 plays.
Furlong was happy with McInally's field goals, kickoffs and punts on a rainy night.
The Phantoms played without the services of two all-league senior, two-way players in tight end/linebacker Vince Ciaverelli and running back/linebacker Ricky Yenchick.
Greg Porter played a full game at tight end for the first time and doubled at his usual defensive end spot. One of his hits forced one of two lost Unionville fumbles. Brandon Johnston played well in his first start at the other defensive end slot.
Furlong thought both his offensive and defensive lines did a solid job against a big, physical Unionville ballclub.
