Taking this year's singles crown was OJR's Christina Manfredi, who after defeating Phoenixville's Laura Ng, topped Upper Perkiomen's Kelly Moll 6-1, 6-2 to become singles champion.
"It feels good knowing the hard work paid off," Manfredi said. "It took a lot of hustling to get to the ball and I was lucky to be able to make some good shots. I just concentrated on where I wanted to hit the ball and went after it."
With the win, Manfredi qualified for this year's AAA district championship along with a handful of other competitors at Owen J. Roberts over the weekend.
Reaching the finals automatically qualified Moll, who bested Sarah Holskin in a fiery semi-final match that was decided 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Holskin also qualified.
Perkiomen Valley's Julia Loucks took fifth place to earn a district singles berth.
Two Phoenixville tennis players, Ng (top AA finisher) and Kourtney Kelly (AA runner-up) qualified for the AA district tournament. Ng finished third overall, with Kelly finishing sixth.
"I thought I played pretty well. I thought I was consistent and ran down everything I could get to," Ng said, after losing to Manfredi, the tournament's top seeded player, in the semi-finals.
"I knew she (Manfredi) had more power than me so I just tried to keep the ball in play and let her make the errors. She's a really good player though and it just didn't work out at the end. I gave it my best though," Ng said.
The match was a great test for Ng, who has challenged herself to remain undefeated in PAC-10 play. Ng is also expecting a great finish to the season in doubles.
The Phantom's teammate, Kourtney Kelly, defeated a pair Pottstown players in Kisha Robinson and Jen Mentzer in consolation play to earn her AA district singles lock in.
Kelly came into Saturday after a disappointing loss to Holskin the day before, but her spirits remained high, and that showed with commanding wins over Robinson (6-0, 6-1) and Mentzer (6-1, 6-2). Kelly had to win her first match on Saturday in order to advance to the next level.
"It was tough coming back today knowing that I needed to win in order to make districts," Kelly said.
Kelly also needed to overcome injury to get that win.
"I have a torn shoulder muscle and really tried to rest it last night. It felt a lot better coming into today, which allowed me to move easier and focus better on strategy," Kelly said.
Outside of individual accomplishment, Kelly noted that she was looking forward to facing OJR in a match on Thursday, hoping that the Phantoms team can take second place in the PAC-10.
Tournament players played hard throughout the competitive fires of the event with the ladies complimenting their opponent's nice shots and congratulating one another. The same could not be said about some of the players' parents who, despite the rain holding off, provided their own storm by heckling some young competitors before some coaches became involved.
