,KIMBERTON -- Paced by the strong pitching of Tony Gruenling and Cole Luzins, along with the hot bats of Luc Luttmann, Cameron Cook and Jared Smola, Kimberton defeated archrival Phoenixville, 7-3, in the championship game of the District 4 Cal Ripken Tournament for 12-year-olds.
Brett Somers had three hits for Phoenixville while Chris Rutkowski and Alex Stewart added doubles.
Both Kimberton and Phoenixville will now advance to this weekend's state tournament in Waynesboro.
Kimberton opened tournament play with a 15-4 victory over Spring-Ford. Luttman, Gruenling, Luzins, along with Matt Maerz and Rob Purcell, had two hits. Outstanding defensive plays by shortstp Chris Bauers and first baseman Chris Kolewicz helped aid the cause.
Kimberton reached the winner's bracket final with a 10-8 victory over Methacton. John Hopkins had two hits while Chase Line and Purcell added singles.
The next game saw Kimberton shut out Phoenixville, 7-0. Purcell, Maerz and Smola had two hits apiece. Alex Stewart and Tom Kowchek had hits for Phoenixville.
In the title game, Greg Everett and Tony Gruenling had key hits as Kimberton jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Phoenixville. Phoenixville rallied to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Cameron Cook's second double of the game gave Kimberton a 7-3 advantage.
