Shippensburg University sophomore quarterback Chad DiFebbo (Kimberton, St. Pius X) completed 15 of 33 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, but the Red Raiders fell to Shepherd, 20-16.

DiFebbo, a 6-foot-2 redshirt junior, threw one of the touchdowns to younger brother Chase DiFebbo (Kimberton, Phoenixville), a redshirt sophomore who had three receptions for 23 total yards from his split end position.

West Chester got a big offensive game from 6-foot-4 junior tight end Ryan Paulson (Phoenixville) and two solid defensive efforts from junior Jay Nelson (Phoenixville) and sophomore Travis Ford-Bey (Phoenixville), but the Golden Rams dropped their season opener, 44-32, at No. 5 California of Pa.

Paulson grabbed six passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns, which covered 44 and 12 yards, resepctively. Nelson made eight tackles from his cornerback slot on defense and Ford-Bey, at defensive end, had three tackles.

Millersville backup quarterback Bill Shirk (Phoenixville), a redshirt sophomore, completed 8 of 12 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown during the Marauders' 35-22 loss at Bentley. Senior Bob Swier (Spring-Ford) started at tight end for Millersville.

Division I-A

Vanderbilt freshman defensive tackle Rob Lohr (Phoenixville) did not get on the playing field in the Commodores' 34-13 victory over Miami of Ohio.

The Commodores' second game is at home against South Carolina and will be televised on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Division I-AA

Andre Watkins (Spring-Ford), a 2008 graduate, has committed to Hampton University in Hampton, Va.

He was an all-league wide receiver for the Rams last year. Among the teams Hampton played last year was Princeton from the Ivy League.

Hampton is known for sending players to the National Football League (NFL). One of the club's players, Marcus Dixon, was drafted this year and will be featured in an ESPN Special.

packer (Spring-Ford), son of Pottsgrove head coach Rick Pennypacker, has switched from Villanova to Cornell, where he will coach defensive backs and direct the program's video operations. ... Ursinus opens its Division III schedule at Alfred Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Bears have sophomore linebacker Joe Galie (Phoenixville) and freshman defensive tackle Andrew Carr (Phoenixville) on their roster and are coached by Pete Gallagher.

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Joseph's University goalkeeper Kelly Swanick (Malvern, Villa Maria Academy) recorded eight saves in a 3-1 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers Sunday afternoon at Drexel University's Buckley Field in Philadelphia.

The Hawks (1-1) and Hoosiers were tied at 1 at halftime. St. Joseph's returns to action at Buckley Field Saturday afternoon with a noon game against Fairfield.
