SCHUYLKILL -- Boyertown's undefeated Pioneer Athletic Conference golf record might be a bit deceptive because the Bears certainly have not had exactly smooth sailing all the way this year.
But it is, nonetheless, still perfect with one match to go after a 258-269 decision over Phoenixville Tuesday afternoon at Pickering Valley Golf Club.
With the win, Boyertown (8-0) clinched first place during the regular season and a home match in the first round of the PAC-10 Final Four playoffs that begin in two weeks.
Stephen Foell led the visiting Bears with a 49 over 12 holes and teammates Shane McCarthy and Ryan Foell each shot a 50.
Those three have been scoring consistently well, but after that it's been kind of a hit-or-miss affair for the Bears, according to coach Mark Takacs.
"To be honest with you, I've been pleasantly surprised," he said. "I figured out the averages last week and the top four are exactly seven strokes better than the bottom four. I talked to the guys last week and told them the bottom four have to step it up a little bit. Number four through eight, you never know what you're going to get."
Greg Cavallo shot a 54 for the Bears on Tuesday and Tyler Fox completed the scoring five with a 55.
The return of Fox from an injury suffered in a car accident has helped the Bears.
