SCRANTON (AP) - Teachers in the Scranton School District are going on strike, disrupting the beginning of a school year that was to start Wednesday.

Members of the Scranton Federation of Teachers voted to authorize a strike last week and union leaders decided to call a strike after failing to work out an agreement Saturday. Another negotiating session is scheduled Monday, but union President Rosemary Boland says the two sides are far apart.

Boland says the dispute involves pay, health care and retirement benefits.
