PHOENIXVILLE - The Phoenixville Area School Board (PASB) voted unanimously to make Troy Czukoski, Ed.D., the new principal of Phoenixville Area Middle School, at last week's meeting.

The district chose Czukoski from a pool of 69 applicants as part of a comprehensive statewide search that began in April 2004.

Czukoski will fill the $105,000 per year position following the retirement of Jay Hassan, Ed.D.

Major components of the search included a statewide advertising campaign, use of personal contacts, mailings to colleges, universities, school districts and professional organizations, on-line searches and other marketing strategies, according to a press release issued by the PASD on June 17.

On June 9, a 10-member committee consisting of administrators, faculty and a school board member interviewed five finalists and made recommendations to PASD Superintendent David Noyes, Ed.D.

"We conducted a statewide search and I believe we found the best candidate," said Noyes. "Troy Czukoski will bring a tremendous mix of energy, vision, commitment and expertise to Phoenixville Area Middle School. We are very excited to have him join our administrative team."

The finalists also were asked to provide written responses about how they would deal with real-life crisis scenarios.

Czukoski is a West Chester University graduate; he earned a Bachelors in Science degree in Elementary Education in 1993. He also earned a Masters of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Duquesne University's Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in 2003 and attended Immaculata University.

He recently completed a doctoral dissertation in Reading and Literacy from Columbus University.

He earned National Board Certification in Professional Teaching Standards in Early Adolescent English and Language Arts in 2000, a distinction only achieved by one-tenth of one percent of educators in the United States.

In July 2004, he achieved the honor of Writing and Literature Fellow and he also served on the Governor's Academy for Urban Education.

"I am so excited to be a part of the Phoenixville Area School District team and cannot wait to get started in the middle school," he said. "Together we will prepare and inspire our early adolescent students, through a program that facilitates critical thought and problem solving, to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world."

Czukoski taught for eight years at Fugett Middle School in West Chester and served as assistant principal at West Chester East High School. He was also principal of Gordon Elementary School in the Coatesville Area School District.

The married Exton resident and father of two sons served in the U. S. Army Reserves and the Pennsylvania National Guard form 1988 to 1994.

"I believe that as Phoenixville Middle School's next instructional leader I will bring leadership based on loyalty, integrity, initiative, communication and an emphasis on putting children first," said Czukoski. "One of my favorite sayings is an Ancient Chinese Proverb that states, 'When the best leader's work is done, the people say, 'we did it ourselves.""
