PHOENIXVILLE -- The Rev. Richard A. Mathisen will present his 12th annual benefit piano recital, Sunday, July 27, at 7 p.m. The recital will take place at St. John Lutheran Church, 355 St. John's Circle, Phoenixville. The church is air-conditioned. Rev. Mathisen serves as interim pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Spring City.
The recital will benefit SEKUCo University in Tanzania, a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, which trains special education teachers. Tickets will be available at the door. The suggested donation is $7.
The major pieces on the program are the Bach-Busoni Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata,'' and Chopin's B flat minor Scherzo, as well as other works by Haydn, Schubert, Sibelius and Rachmaninoff.
Rev. Mathisen's recitals have been enjoyed by all listeners, even those who are not usually fans of classical music. He offers a brief introduction to each piece. Mathisen studied piano with Klaus Goetze of Cambridge and Jan Gorbaty in Forest Hills, Queens. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he played a piano concerto with the Academy orchestra, and has presented 37 full length solo recitals since that time.
Mathisen is a graduate of Rutgers University, the Rutgers Law School, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Before entering the ministry, he served as a corporate manager for the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark. He is married and lives in Ambler.
