PHOENIXVILLE — The Phoenixville Fire Department hosted its annual Kickoff to Fire Prevention Week by participating in "First Friday" festivities in downtown Phoenixville.
The fire department occupied the municipal parking lot at Main & Bridge streets from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.
In conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association, the theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
In support of this message firefighters encouraged children to think of two ways out of each room in their home. Firefighters also passed out a Fire Escape Plan card for families to take home to create their own fire escape plan.
The Phoenixville Fire Company continues to promote its Smoke Alarm program for those residents of Phoenixville who are unable to purchase or maintain smoke alarms. Residents may sign up for the program by calling the 610-933-9717. All residents are reminded to test smoke alarms each month.
In addition to bringing Phoenixville Fire Department vehicles and equipment to First Friday, the Northern Chester County Fire Chiefs Association's Fire Safety Smoke House was available for families to tour and learn fire safety tips. The Smoke House has a kitchen and bedroom with various simulated fire dangers and simulated smoke. The Smoke House allows families to practice two escape routes from each room.
Over the next two weeks, firefighters will visit schools and early learning centers in Phoenixville to share fire safety tips with students.
