BOYERTOWN -- Phoenixville came up short of Boyertown, 4-3, in a five-inning Twin County League Junior American Legion baseball game shortened by rain Tuesday night. The game was a suspended contest and was picked up in the top of the second inning. The umpires called the game after a 20-minute delay.
Dillon Fina pitched three innings for Phoenixville (12-9) with seven strikeouts and seven walks. Scott Vaile hurled an inning of relief with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Drew Pilcicki went 2-for-2 with a run batted in for the Babe Ruth Phantoms. Catcher Derek Ryan ripped a run-scoring triple in two official trips to the plate.
"We were down 3-0, but we tied it up in the top of the fourth inning," said Phoenixville manager Brian Tell. "Boyertown scored the winning run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk. Walks killed us."
Phoenixville is still in a battle for the final two playoff berths with NorChester and Spring City already locked into the first two of four positions. Uwchlan (eight losses), Boyertown Grizzlies (10 losses) and Upper Perkiomen (10 losses) are also in the playoff chase.
The Babe Ruth Phantoms resume their slate Wednesday night against Pottstown at Sundstrom Field with a 6 p.m. starting time.
Phoenixville has its final scheduled home game against Spring City Thursday night at 6 p.m. at deSanno Field and closes out the regular season at Pottsgrove Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Phoenixville 8, Concordville 5: The Athletics exploded for seven second-inning runs to win the non-league contest Tuesday evening on the road.
Devon Landis and Jesse Daywalt slammed triples for Phoenixville (12-10).
