Small businesses are the leading light in today's economy. Shine A Light describes small businesses as: "leading our country and their local communities to a new and better way of working and thinking."

Shine A Light, a partnership between NBC Universal and American Express is inviting citizens to "shine a light" on an inspiring small business.

Of those currently nominated, Phoenixville's Earth Mart, located at 235 Bridge Street, has been nominated as an inspiring small business.

However, now the next task for Earth Mart in the Shine A Light contest. Every nominated business must receive 50 endorsements - 50 viewers that are just as inspired as the person who nominated the business. Without 50 endorsements, the business cannot move to be a finalist.

Earth Mart is an environmental department store that offers consumers a sustainable shopping option that opened its doors in April of 2007. They specialize in stylish "green" and sustainable living.

The store is also in the fight against child and slave labor. The products purchased for Earth Mart are Fair Trade products.

The last day to endorse a business is Sept. 13, after which three of the businesses will be chosen as finalist. The top three will be judged by a panel of celebrity judges: Diane Von Furstenberg, creator of the warp dress, the 2005 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and is actively involved member of her local community; JJ Ramberg, the host of MSNBC's "Your Business" and previously a reporter for CNN; and Ellen Degeneres, daytime talk show host, stand-up comedian and Amnesty Interational Award recipient.

Winners will be announced on October 19. The winning small business will receive $50,000 in grant and $50,000 worth of marketing support.
