OAKS - Moviegoers attending the Regal Cinemas Marketplace 24 this evening may experience "the time of their lives" in conjunction with this weekend's release of "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights."
From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., "there will be a bevy of activities for everyone to be involved in keeping with the flavor of the film's opening," said Karl Rahmer, promotions director at the theater.
The award-winning dancers of the "Steppin' Out Academy of Performing Arts in Oaks will be on hand to present dance routines and steps in the theater's lobby, said Rahmer.
"The dance team is instructed by a mother and daughter team of Gail and Jennifer Oldfield," said Rahmer. "The dancers may invite patrons to dance with them 'salsa style' or learn some new dance steps. Gail is a former Radio City Rockette who may surprise us with a high step."
Rahmer said the lobby area will be decorated with flowers from Moles Flower & Gift Shop of Norristown.
"They will be providing the floral atmosphere that sets the Havana Nights mood of the film," he said. "Some lucky patrons will win some floral arrangements to take home or win a gift certificate for a future arrangement from Moles."
Manicurists from Ultimate Image Salon & Day Spa in Jeffersonville will be on site to make sure the ladies have perfect hands for their dancing partners, said Rahmer.
Representatives from Max & Erma's in Oaks will stop by to present balloons and kids menus for the youngsters, and patrons who take their ticket stub from "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" to Max & Erma's will receive a free Tortilla Soup.
Rahmer said staff members of the theater will have a table available for people to sign up for the Regal Crown Club.
"It's free to join and the more you go to the movies, the more points you collect," he said. "It's an opportunity to collect points as you watch movies and earn prizes along the way, such as free extra points on Tuesdays, free popcorn on Thursdays, and a free ticket upon reaching 'Star Status' (75 points). Those who sign up on Friday night only will be entered into a drawing for gift certificates from Max & Erma's, movie tickets, Philadelphia Phantoms hockey tickets, and much more."
"Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" is set in 1958, when 18-year-old Katey Miller (Romola Garai) is a lonely American girl who moves to Havana, Cuba, with her parents in the days right before the Revolution. Schooled by her parents in the art of ballroom dancing, Katey soon meets a charming, local dancer named Javier (Diego Luna). Determined to learn Javier's slinky, spectacular dance moves, Katey persuades him to partner with her in a prestigious national dance competition at a grand local nightclub.
"Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" is a prequel to the 1987 surprise hit, "Dirty Dancing," which grossed more than $150 million worldwide on a budget of only $6 million, which makes it one of the most profitable films ever made. Original "Dirty Dancing" star Patrick Swayze makes a cameo appearance in the new movie.
"Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" is rated PG-13 for sensuality. Running time is 1 hour, 26 minutes.
