CALN TOWNSHIP — A bicyclist is fighting for his life after being struck by a car Friday morning on East Lincoln Highway in Caln Township.
Caln Township police said the accident occurred at 6:38 a.m. in the 2700 Block of Lincoln Highway.Madison Dagostino, 19, of Romansville, driving a 2012 Chrysler 200 east on Lincoln Avenue, traveled off the roadway and struck a utility pole.
The vehicle continued to travel in an easterly direction, and struck a cyclist that was also traveling eastbound within a bike lane located along the south side of the highway, police said
The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash. The cyclist, Srirama Kayyalmudi, 48, was transported to Paoli Hospital by Washington Hose Company Ambulance and is listed in critical condition.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Caln Township Police at 610-383-1821. Officers were assisted at the scene by the Chester County Serious Crash Assistance Team (SCAT), the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Company, and the Veterans Affairs Fire Department. PECO responded for damage to the utility pole.
Eastbound Lincoln Highway remained closed between South Bailey Road and Barley Sheaf Road until 11 a.m.
According to the latest statistics on bicycle and car collisions, cyclists make up 2 percent of deaths caused by motor vehicles. Nearly 66 percent of fatally injured bicyclists were not wearing helmets. And nearly 50,000 bicyclists were injured on roadways in accidents with motor vehicles.
