MONT CLARE — A five-mile paddle fundraiser for the Schuylkill Canal Association brought in close to $2,000 Wednesday evening.
The paddle took participants from the boat launch at Lock 60 down the Schuylkill River and back by way of the canal.
Among the largest donations received at the event was $500 from state Rep. Warren Kampf, R-157th Dist., according to organizer Doug Chapman of Take It Outdoors Adventures. Because the amount raised surpassed $1,000, Chapman was wearing a dress during the fundraiser as he navigated the canal on a paddle board.
Money raised by the event, which included a free beer for every participant over age 21 courtesy of Sly Fox Brewery in Pottstown, will fund work to maintain Lock 60 and the surrounding park and locktender’s house. Lock 60 is the only lock remaining on the former Schuylkill Canal, which was part of a canal system that allowed coal to be shipped from Port Carbon and Pottsville down the Schuylkill River to Philadelphia.
