Shark Week: LIVE is back, bigger than a great hammerhead, and better than ever at Adventure Aquarium! This year’s annual Shark Week festivities will have even more bite as Adventure Aquarium celebrates everyone’s favorite mysterious sea creatures from August 9 - 17. Guests can come face-to-face with the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast, including rarely exhibited species and the only great hammerhead shark on display in the United States.
“From new shark studies to more frequent shark sightings, sharks have been all over the news this summer. Shark Week: LIVE is the perfect opportunity for guests at Adventure Aquarium to face their fears all while gaining a new sense of appreciation and understanding for these frequently misunderstood and fascinating creatures,” said Adventure Aquarium Executive Director, Kevin Keppel.
Shark Week: LIVE invites guests to dive into activities that are sure to excite guests of all ages. The 550,000 gallon Shark Realm exhibit allows guests to get up close with more than 20 sharks, while true thrill-seekers can brave the suspended 40-ft Shark Tunnel for a 180 degree view—it’s the closest someone could come to swimming with sharks without getting wet!
Throughout the week, guests will be able to experience sharks hands-on with Adventure Aquarium’s Touch-a-Shark exhibit. With six shark species on display, shark-lovers get to go beyond the glass and feel these incredible animals with their own hands. Shark Week: LIVE also opens up an incredible behind-the-scenes experience with exclusive, Top of Tank tours that offer guests a rare opportunity to view Shark Realm from above. A limited number of guests on the Top of Tank tours will also have the opportunity to witness a shark feeding in return for a $10 donation to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).*
“Sharks may have a scary reputation but in reality, these fascinating animals are rarely a threat to humans. More people are killed every year by dogs, bees, lightning and lions than by sharks,” explained Nikki Grandinetti, Curator of Fish & Invertebrates. “People also underestimate the intelligence of sharks. They have some of the largest brains among all fish, with brain-to-body ratios similar to mammals and birds. They’re even capable of learning a conditioned response faster than a cat or rabbit.”
Also at Shark Week: LIVE, guests can brush up on their shark facts with scheduled talks from Adventure Aquarium’s shark experts, who will teach guests all about the species that inhabit Adventure Aquarium and what it takes to care for these extraordinary animals.
Finally, Adventure Aquarium wants to get the Delaware Valley pumped for the most FINtastic week of the year! Starting Thursday, July 31 through the beginning of Shark Week, Adventure Aquarium’s official shark mascot “Gill” will be hosting ticket raids throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
