Spring City captured the Pennsylvania Junior Legion Regional Tournament championship at West Lawn on July 30. The Red Sox topped Spring Gorve, 8-3, to capture the crown.
Spring City thus advances to the state tournament, which begins Aug. 2 at Freemansburg. The Red Sox (28-11) take on Nether Providence at 2 p.m.
The Red Sox scored four runs in the third inning before sealing the verdict with one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Michael Aquilante led Spring City with three hits and three runs batted in while Quinn McKenna added two hits and two RBIs in the winning effort.
Riley Monahan pitched seven innings and racked up five strikeouts as he took the mound win.
The Boyertown Grizzlies won the Wayne Regional at Radnor High School and will also compete at states.
Spring City 6, Wissahickon 2: Ethan Hellberg drove in three runs with two singles to spark Spring City to a victory over Wissahickson in the Junior Legion Eastern Regional tournament at Ted Palka Park in West Lawn on July 27.
Spring City relied on Brandon Ferrie to take up innings en route to the win. Ferrie pitched 6.1 innings and allowed one earned run with five hits and four wlaks as well as three strikeouts.
Spring City stayed on top after taking the lead in the second inning. The Red Sox scored one run on an RBI single by Cam Michaud. After posting two runs in the fifth, Spring City again scored two in the sixth. In the fifth, Spring City scored on a run-scoring single by Hellberg, which scored pinch runner Jack McLaughlin.
Spring City 1, West Lawn 0: Spring City needed 13 innings, but the Red Sox were able to gut out a win over host West Lawn on July 28 to win the winners’ bracket final at the West Lawn regional.
Spring City kicked off the tourney by edging Jonestown, 3-2, on July 26 in a morning contest. A sixth-inning run gave the Red Sox their decisive run.
Riley Monahan singled home Cam Michaud, who tripled in the sixth. That broke a 2-2 tie, and the Sox closed out Jonestown in the seventh to finish off the game.
Monahan pitched 6.1 innings of five-hit, six-strikeout baseball for the Red Sox in picking up the win. Jake Zoller recorded the save by registering the final two outs in the seventh.
Brandon Ferrie tripled for one of his two hits.
