PHOENIXVILLE - Phoenixville Recreation dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to host Downingtown in the Southern Chester County Junior Tennis League on July 21.
In the 18-year-olds’ division, Christian Lehning won an 8-1 match. At 14’s, Joe Vaile took an 8-4 verdict. At 14’s, Andrew Holmberg won by an 8-6 score. And also at 14’s, Mila Archer won n 8-7 battle.
In another 18’s match, Mike Pinelli dropped an 8-6 decision. At 14’s, Cameron Nicolene fell by an 8-2 margin. Cate Rieg, at 12’s, was edged in an 8-7 final.
On July 23, Phoenixville hosted Kennett Square Golf & Country Club in its last regularly scheduled match of the season. Phoenixville had 20 players and Kennett fielded 14. Phoenixville wound up securing a 6-3 victory to boost its summer season record to 3-5.
At 18’s, Nick Vaile won by an 8-1 margin. In boys’ doubles, Mike Ellis and Christian Lehning combined for an 8-4 win after trailing 3-0 at the outset. At 14’s, Graham Light won an 8-4 final, and Joe Vaile scored an 8-0 decision.
In girls’ 14’s doubles, Alex Rieg and Cameron Nicolene dropped an 8-2 decision. In 12’s, Victoria Deluca and Cate Rieg were beaten, 8-4.
The boys’ 12’s division featured a tight affair. Phoenixville’s Anthony Deluca and Andrew Holmberg dropped an 8-7 decision with an 8-6 tiebreaker.
Also, Delaney Kent and Alexis Getley won an 8-6 girls’ 12’s doubles match, and Kevin Cushing finished up with an 8-3 singles win in 14’s for the locals.
Phoenixville coach Leo Scoda said the two sides will meet again on July 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Kennett in a “fun” meet to get playing time for everybody since both teams are scheduled to have byes on that date.
