Graterford Road Bridge closed for being unstable

PERKIOMEN — The bridge linking Perkiomen Township and Skippack over the Perkiomen Creek was closed Thursday afternoon due to structural problems.

State police in Skippack confirmed Thursday evening that the Graterford Road Bridge was closed due to “structural instability” for an “indefinite period.”

Perkiomen Township Fire Company announced via Facebook that the bridge failed an inspection because of “structural deterioration.”

It’s unclear what exactly caused the deterioration.

PennDOT officials were observed at the scene around 6:30 p.m.

The Graterford Road Bridge was one of more than two dozen in the area which was given a new weight restriction last summer by state officials.

Located off of Route 29, the bridge carries Graterford Road over Perkiomen Creek and leads to the State Correctional Facility at Graterford.

Heavy rain fell through Wednesday night well into Thursday morning and early afternoon throughout the area. It’s unknown if rising water in the Perkiomen Creek played a role in the bridge closure.

PennDOT could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
