A local college student is going to manage his own business for an internship program, and a way to supplement his college tuition costs.
Juan Andrews, a junior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is opening his own exterior painting business in the Limerick area this summer.
“I found out about the program through an email sent out to my school, to everyone with a 3.5 GPA or higher,” Andrews said. “I was interested in what the email said, so I went to the info session the next day to see what the program was all about. I will be running my business out of the Limerick area, but will be servicing all over the area.”
Andrews graduated from Spring-Ford Area High School, and he is currently an International Business major at IUP. He is a member of the Sigma Alpha Lambda honors society, and he has lived in Limerick for 15 years.
The program is run by Young Entrepreneurs Across America, along with a partnership with Sherwin Williams.
“The purpose of the program is to teach you the ins and outs of the business world through real life experience,” Andrews said. “The reason I applied to become a part of the program is, first I knew it would look great on my resume, and also I am trying to pay my way through school, so I knew this would help me work towards that goal and benefit me more than any regular summer 9-5 job would.”
Andrews is hoping that his business will be very successful and has set of goal of reaching $100,000 in sales for the summer.
“I hope to book many jobs this summer to keep my summer busy, and make enough money to cover next year’s tuition,” Andrews said.
His business will do everything from the body of the homes, to doors, windows, garage trims, garages, faucets, gutters, decks, porches and more.
His company will also be EPA trained and certified, and it received an A+ from the Better Business Bureau.
“This is the 27th year the company has been in business, and there are currently 300 Branch Managers, (which is what I am) throughout the country,” Andrews said.
He is currently offering free, no obligation weekend estimates for anyone looking to get some exterior painting or power washing work done this summer.
Andrews admits that he has worked some in this field, but this will be a new adventure for him.
“I have done little paint jobs here and there but never anything to this magnitude,” he said. “But my crew and I will all be professionally trained by Sherwin Williams representatives personally.”
He is looking forward to this new opportunity and hoping that it will go as planned.
“I am very much looking forward to managing my own business because of the leadership skills it will teach me,” Andrews said. “I will have five employees for my crew this summer, one production manager and four painters.”
