UPPER PROVIDENCE — The township is planning to build a $4.5 million police administration building to replace the outdated facility at the township’s Black Rock Road complex.
Plans for the new building were discussed with a potential construction management firm at the Feb. 3 township supervisors’ meeting.
Police Chief Mark Toomey, along with 23 officers, and two non-uniformed staff, currently work in the 24-year-old building designed to accommodate half that many employees.
Changes in technology and regulations, combined with plans to add five additional officers to the police force, prompted plans to onnect a new 12,000-square-foot police administrative building on the other side of the existing portico of the township complex.
The township has hired the same architect who designed the Franconia Township police building for the police headquarters project.
Supervisors’ Chairwoman Lisa Mossey, who toured that new facility in nearby Telford, described the similar building’s interior design as “functional.”
Michael Ryan, vice president of preconstruction for IMC Construction Inc. of Malvern, pitched his project management services to the supervisors on Feb. 3.
Ryan proposed to personally provide monitoring services for three areas — cost, quality and schedule.
He performed a similar role for local clients including the Phoenixville Police Department and St. Eleanor Church in Collegeville, Ryan told the supervisors.
After Supervisor Philip Barker outlined many unanticipated post-construction problems with township’s almost three-year-old Recreational Center building, Ryan was invited to a future staff meeting to discuss in detail how much time and resources IMC might contribute to township’s own construction project.
Construction of the new police headquarters is expected to begin later this year.
In other news, Chief Toomey reported a recent prevalence of “email money scams” and urged township residents to learn more about the problem on the Upper Providence Township Police Department Facebook page.
