The Collegeville Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) is gearing up to host the latest “Dinner and a Show” event on Sunday, April 6. The CEDC has partnered with the Community Music School (CMS) in Trappe for the event, which will feature a live musical performance by Philadelphia area band the Jazz 5 Pack.
The Dinner and a Show series first started with Ursinus College and has now branched out to other venues within the community. Attendees to the show will receive 10 percent off at local participating restaurants, by showing their purchased theater ticket.
“It’s a great idea, it helps to promote the local restaurants in addition to whatever show is going on,” said Rachael Morrison, manager of the CEDC.
The Jazz 5 Pack, comprising musicians from the Philadelphia, Lancaster and Reading areas, will perform in the Community Music School’s interactive music hall. The band will perform hit songs from the 1920s up through the 1950s, taken from Hollywood musical films, Broadway musicals and musical theater shows. They will also play bebop from the 1940s jazz era. The group covers songs by a number of great jazz musicians, such as Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Miles Davis and many others.
“The CMS has a wonderful room to hear the music acoustics. The music theater is absolutely fantastic,” Morrison noted. “The music of the Jazz 5 Pack is music that you could hear in center city, so why travel all the way there when you could just stay in the Collegeville area and get to visit all of our local restaurants and then hear a great jazz ensemble?”
Morrison said they are planning to expand the Dinner and a Show series into more venues in the Collegeville area, with four or five events each year.
“We did two (events) with Ursinus, and we sold out. Now we’re trying with Community Music School and see how they do with it,” remarked Morrison. “We’ve been approached by a couple of other theater companies that want to be involved. It’s a great idea; it’s really easy for us to do because all the restaurants jump right on board. We’ll see how far we can make it go.”
