St. Johnís Lutheran Church, 355 St. Johnís Circle, Phoenixville, is pleased to present the Susquehanna University Choir in concert on Sunday, March 2, at 7 p.m.

The concert is presented as part of the choirís annual spring recruitment tour Feb. 28 - March 4. Students in the choir will sing in high schools and churches in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania as they share the quality music program available to future students at Susquehanna.

The choir is comprised primarily of music majors, though students of all majors are eligible for membership in the ensemble based on an extensive audition. Ryan Fitch, a tenor in the choir, stated, ďAs a music major with an instrumental emphasis it is really nice to be in choir. I feel that it makes me a well-rounded musician.Ē

Music for the tour will include works by Handel, Brahms, Pinkham, Matsushita and Casals. The program also provides selections of living American composers such as Wilberg, Clausen, Ames and Basler. Featured are a set of American folk hymns arranged by a variety of composers. One of Moses Hoganís most celebrated spirituals will conclude the concert.

The Chamber Singers, 14 gifted students selected from the Choir, complete the program with selected French Chansons. This portion of the program will offer an opportunity for the chamber singers to demonstrate their solo versatility and independent musicianship.

Julia Brasher Thorn, The Cyril Stretansky Distinguished Professor of Choral Music, is in her second year as Director of Choral Activities at Susquehanna. Prior to joining the faculty at SU, she was Professor of Music at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., where she taught for 15 years. Dr. Thorn has conducted invited choirs at the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Educators and National Collegiate Choral Organization Conventions and made her Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 2007.

There is no ticket charge for the concert at St. Johnís, however a free will offering will be received. In addition childcare will be provided.

St. Johnís is located at 355 St. Johnís Circle, off Routes 23 and 29 in Phoenixville. For additional information contact the church office, 610.933.3947.
