It was a somber yet celebratory afternoon at the National Memorial Arch at Valley Forge, as over a two hundred and fifty individuals and special guests came together for a noontime Veterans Day Commemoration. Serving as emcee for the event was Valley Forge Park Ranger Rhonda Schier.Among the special speakers were Michael J. Mescavage, Commander for the State of PA Military Order of the Purple Heart and a veteran of the U.S. Army, Valley Forge Park Ranger William Troppman and Chairman of the Friends of Valley Forge Park Don Nalmoli. Special participants to the day included the Captain Harris D. Buckwalter American Legion Post 0164 and VFW Post 6341 from Royersford, serving as Color Guard, and the Collegeville Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (Chapter 25), who offered the Rifle Salute. The event music was performed by the 78th Army Band from Fort Dix, as well as Bugles Across America.
Also in attendance were Gold Star Mothers from the area, who were given honorary seating directly in front of the speakers’ lectern. Included in the Commemoration was the Oath of Enlistment Ceremony, whereupon twenty recruits took the oath to be inducted into the United States Military before all present.
