36th annual Phoenixville CROP Hunger Walk is Oct. 20

Hunger and poverty are rampant in our world, and escalating in the current economic conditions. Something can and must be done about them. Our local CROP Hunger Walk is a great place to start. For a few hours and a few miles, friends and neighbors will be coming together to, inthe words of I John 3:18, ď...love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.Ē

This year our community celebrates 36 years of walking! The 36th Phoenixville CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, October 20th at First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville, 145 South Main Street to show our love and active concern for neighbors in need near and far. On-site registration and opening ceremonies begin at 12:00pm followed by the walk at 1:00pm. The participants, ranging from newborns to nonagenarians, will be raising awareness and funds to change the world in real and measurable ways -- digging wells that will bring clean water to villages; providing seeds and tools so that people can grow their own food; helping communities and families rebuild after disaster. Whether itís responding to flood and tornado damage in parts of the U.S., or helping to rebuild earthquake-damaged homes in Haiti, CROP Hunger Walks are making a difference.

CROP Hunger Walk funds will benefit the overall work and ministry of Church World Service -- working around the world to help those in need help themselves through refugee assistance, self-help development programs, advocacy, and disaster relief. And, itís important to note that 25 percent of what we raise will help St. Maryís Shelter and the Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS) in their important work here in Phoenixville.

So please mark your calendars, look for more information (including the walk route) in the bulletins, on the announcement board, and even around town, and plan to join us, whether as a walker or sponsor. St. Johnís Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a spaghetti dinner for a small donation, all proceeds going to the crop hunger walk, for people who cannot attend or not able to walk. The dinner will be on October 19th in their hospitality hall. Together -- with your family, friends, and the St. Johnís team -- we can change the world, one step at a time.

You can register as part of the St. Johnís Lutheran Church Team online today and begin gathering sponsors at www.crophungerwalk.org/PhoenixvillePA.
