So….I have been getting a good number of responses from the readers of this paper. They are all surprised to see the title of most of our articles. Topics having to do with Irritable bowel Syndrome, Vertigo, Asthma, Fibromyalgia, ADD. The responses are all surprised and supportive. What I am taking away is that folks in our area are hungry for Heath Care that doesn’t have negative side effects!!
But….of course there are still people who want a Chiropractor to stick to back pain. I haven’t heard from any but patients tell me they are out there.
So if what you’re looking for is The Best Method for Raking Leaves this Fall or How to Properly Lift Your Holiday Packages…you’ve come to the wrong place. While they are important to know……. It is not what excites me about Chiropractic.
So read on, give me a chance to show you why Chiro gets me so hyped up! Then hopefully I will get some great letters from you too!
I’d like to explain how chiropractic works and its true purpose. Through explaining how it works you will gain an understanding of Chiropractic as health care.
Here we go….
Let’s talk Chiropractic 101.
Chiropractic doesn’t just stop the symptoms of a problem, it fixes the cause of the problem. That is it in a nutshell!
Let’s look at asthma as an example. We can say some symptoms are wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can be brought on by many things: pollen, an upper respiratory illness, or maybe running across the basketball court. Using an inhaler will temporarily stop the symptoms so you can breathe again. Thank goodness for that. But the next time you (or your child) are attempting to go full throttle down the inside lane of the basketball court to take your lay up, what is going to happen? You guessed it…you’ll be looking for the inhaler. I am grateful that there are inhalers to help at that moment of crisis, but wouldn’t it be nice to find out why your lungs cannot handle certain environmental stimuli while so many others can? Wouldn’t it be nice to find the cause and fix it?
Here is how it works.
Your brain is like Computer Control Command Central. Every organ, gland, muscle, nook and cranny of your body is controlled by your brain.
What connects your Brain to the rest of your body is your Spinal Cord. Your spinal cord has millions of tiny little Spinal Nerves that flow from the cord and out between the bones of your spine, kind of like the electrical wiring in your house. Then those same nerves carry the messages from your brain to each and every part of your body. To every organ, gland, muscle, nook and cranny of your body! That is how your body works! Pretty simple right? That is the basis of chiropractic. The Nervous System runs everything.
I know what you are thinking. We all learned about the Nervous System in 6th grade science class, right? Well hang on to your seat. Here is where it gets really interesting!
Spinal bones move! They are made to move on purpose. Thanks to those moving bones we can bend and twist. Imagine going bowling and not having that flexibility in your spine?
The problem is that the bones can also move out of position and not move back correctly.
When spinal bones get stuck out of position, they put pressure on those tiny little spinal nerves not allowing them to get their messages through.
Let’s say these failed nerves were supposed to carry messages to your lungs but now only 50% of the messages can get there because it is being squeezed off by those bones! What might happen? You could have symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath and probably have a hard time running for that lay up.
If this failed nerve controls your stomach, you may experience heartburn, acid reflux and excessive burping.
If this failed nerve controls your bowel, you may experience diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel, colitis or Crohn’s disease.
If this failed nerve controls your Eustachian tubes or middle ear, you may experience dizziness, or recurring ear infections.
Whatever this failed nerve controls it will not be able to work at its best!
As long as your brain can connect to all of your organs, glands, and muscles, these areas will be able to function at there best! We call this normal!
Chiropractors correct this communication so the nerve can work its best. We correct the misaligned spinal bones (subluxations) by putting a gentle force into this area in the proper direction. This can be done with the doctor’s hand or an instrument designed specifically for the spine.
Now the nerve is able to control your stomach, bowels, lungs, muscles so they can work at their best.
This results in good health.
Problem fixed.
Think about your own health, or your children’s. Are there recurring symptoms that you are covering up with Advil, a lifetime of prescriptions or one antibiotic after another? Worse yet. Do you have a recurring problem that, even though you have seen a number of doctors and specialists, no one seems to find the right diagnosis?
Consider seeing a chiropractor if any of this information hits a little too close to home for you. If you have more questions you need answered before taking the plunge, feel free to call me at my office.
That is it for this week Neighbors. I look forward to chatting with you again.
See you next week!
