A duo of small businesses is once again teaming up to hold their fourth Scarecrow Festival in Skippack Village on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The two shops, Heart’s Desire and Floral & Hardy, are located across the street from one another and often combine efforts to hold special events.
“For this festival e do more than just make scarecrows,” said Lowell, the owner-operator of Floral & Hardy, “there is also face painting, pumpkin decorating, games and photo ops.”
The festival is geared toward children ages 10 and younger, and both shops host different activities on their premises. Registration for the main event, the building of the scarecrows, takes place at Heart’s Desire and the building of the scarecrows takes place at Floral & Hardy – which is a garden center. At Floral & Hardy, Lowell and his staff set up a number of outdoor stations where participants put together the different components of their scarecrows.
“We set up our yard as a scarecrow ‘production facility’,” he explained. “All that we ask the kids to bring are clothes for the scarecrow. We supply everything else. There are stations for the stakes, the stuffing, the ‘sack’ heads, ropes, paint and decorations like buttons, feathers and patches.”
Lowell said that building a scarecrow takes about a half-hour, and once the scarecrows are complete, participants can either take them home or put them on display at the garden center.
“Last year we had 79 scarecrows. This year we bought enough to make 100 scarecrows,” he said.
The cost to participate in the Scarecrow Festival is just $15, with all proceeds raised going to support a cat rescue – the Kitty Adoption team, or K.A.T. This is the same organization where Lowell adopted Basil, Floral & Hardy’s friendly cat, who can often be found lounging among the many plants and decorations at the garden center.
“Fall is an amazing time of year and this is a fun fall event,” said Lowell, “it is inexpensive and hands-on – a neat was to start the season. We see it as a lead in to the Family Day event that (Floral & Hardy, Heart’s Desire and Sharp Unique Gifts for Men – another neighboring business) all put on together. Family Day takes place Oct. 19 and we will have a corn maze, an all-day kid’s concert, a Root Beer fest and more – and it’s all ‘on the house’.
Floral & Hardy is located at 4007 Skippack Pike, Skippack, Pennsylvania 19474, and Heart’s Desire is located at 4006 Skippack Pike, Skippack, Pennsylvania 19474 (Behind Mal’s Diner).
