Spring-Ford SNAP (Students Need an Alternate Party), the group of community members who team with the Spring Ford Education Foundation to provide a safe post-prom event for Spring-Ford students, is hosting the Spring-Ford LIVE! Battle of the Bands on Friday, October 11 in order to help raise funds for this year’s post-prom event.
“This is a fundraiser we are holding for SNAP because our post-prom party costs a lot to put on,” said Maria Hadfield, co-chair of the SNAP Battle of the Bands committee. “Last year we had approximately 850 students attend the post-prom party – we like to give students a safe alternative for post-prom (activities).”
The Battle of the Bands is taking place on homecoming weekend in the auditorium of the Ninth Grade Center (located at 400 S Lewis Rd, Royersford, PA 19468). The show begins at 8 p.m. and the price of admission is $5 in advance or $6 at the door.
The show, which is still looking for additional acts, will feature performances by Spring-Ford students. The contest field is open to bands of two or more musicians ranging from 7th through 12th grade, as long as at least one of the musicians is a Spring-Ford student.
“We had a battle of the bands several years ago at the high school, and the SNAP Committee decided to revive the event this year.” said Hadfield. “The grand prize is a package from Phoenixville’s Rock & Roll After School (musical school).”
That package includes a ten-week band session with Rock & Roll After School wherein the winners will work with the school’s seasoned musicians and create original songs. The ten weeks will be capped off with a show featuring the bands from that session hosted by Rock & Roll After School.
The acts currently confirmed for the Spring-Ford LIVE! Battle of the Bands are No Poetry, What’s Next and Factual Fiction.
“These are very talented students and we are excited to see them perform. Right now there are three bands: No Poetry is a popular band. They have played many gigs in the area and also performed at last year’s Mr. Spring-Ford. What’s Next most recently performed at Limerick (Community Day), and Factual Fiction is a newly formed duet.”
Hadfield said that the committee is looking for at least two more bands to sign up.
“In order to audition you need to play live for some of our committee members, and we will come to you to see you perform,” she explained.
Hadfield said that she and her fellow committee co-chair James Johnson agreed to head the Battle of the Bands because they are very passionate about kids being involved in music.
“I joined because I love music and wanted to help the students showcase their talent. My son is a musician in the 8th grade at Spring-Ford, he plays guitar, and when I helped out with the 7th and 8th grade talent show I saw these talented kids getting the opportunity to perform with their peers, it was just great. Plus I believe in SNAP. It is nice to have an alternative for post-prom – there are games, prizes, dancing a moon bounce, it is a wonderful experience.”
She added that the school has been very approving of SNAP and fundraising efforts like the Battle of the Bands.
“Spring-Ford has been supportive of the SNAP program and the school’s staff and faculty have been great in helping us get the word out about this event.”
In addition to seeking other performers, Spring-Ford LIVE! Battle of the Bands is also on the lookout for event sponsors.
“You can sponsor a band or sponsor a prize,” Hadfield said. “For $150 a company can sponsor a band – you will get to be a judge, have your business advertised on our website and (with signage and in the program) on the day of the event. Plus you will get added to our SNAP Wall of Fame at the Post Prom (event) – on the wall we list all of those who have contributed over the years.”
She also stated that anyone interested in volunteering with putting put on the event is more than welcome to get involved.
“We will never turn down an extra pair of hands!”
