The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks will transport to a different era on Saturday September 14, when the 2nd annual Retro Con turns back the clock to celebrate all things retro and geeky.

We put on this convention to show our love for all things pop culture, especially the 70s and 80s, said Rosemary A. Tuski, organizer of the convention. We have a focus on fan interaction, and try to include features that bring out the creativity in people, such as a costume contest.

The convention will boast over 150 tables of collectibles and artwork, and feature special guests, video games, replica TV/movie vehicles, raffle prizes, retro tunes, the costume contest and much more.

According to Tuski the popular genres that will be included in the convention are Star Wars, Transformers, GI Joe, He-man, Ghostbusters, Marvel & DC Superheroes and Doctor Who.

Another important aspect of the convention is raising money for charities.

The costuming group Garrison Carida will be at the convention, with their wildly popular Blast A Trooper feature, where kids (and kids at heart) can shoot their favorite Star Wars baddies with NERF darts for a small charity donation to Toys For Tots.

Besides having a fun collectables show, the charities well be centering on include Toys For Tots, the Diabetes Association and the MS Society, Tuski said.

The Philadelphia Ghostbusters and the Cobra 13th Mobile Division costume groups will be collecting for the American Diabetes Association and the National MS Society, respectively.

A big highlight for convention-goers will be the replica TV and movie vehicles that will be there for viewing pleasure. Weather permitting, the Back to the Future DeLorean time machine, KITT from Knight Rider, the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard, the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo, Starsky and Hutchs Gran Torino, and more, will be at the convention.

Tuski is hoping that the convention will be even more successful than last years event.

Our attendance last year was in the 1000 range and we are hoping to double that this year, Tuski said. Weve increased our floor space from 20,000 square feet last year to over 30,000 this year.

The organizers felt that the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center was the perfect location to hold their convention this year.

We are having the convention in Oaks because it is far enough removed from the big city to keep costs for attendees down, Tuski said. Parking is free and the hotel rates are reasonable. It helps the show appeal to folks that normally shy away from conventions.

The Retro Con 2013 will be run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the ticket price at the door is $14 for adults, and kids 12 and under get in for free when accompanied by paying adult.
