Athletics look forward to playoffs

Phoenixville walloped West Chester, 14-2, in a five-inning home game July 8.
The Athletics banged out 11 hits to back winning pitcher Dave Palmen, who gave up five hits and two earned runs in five innings.
Jordan Valenteen had two hits and three runs scored. Joe Little and Chris Demey each scored three runs with one hit. Chris Kucewicz had two RBIs. Cole Luzins drove in three runs with one hit, which was a double. John Hopkins had two hits and two RBIs. Brett Sommers had two RBIs with a double. Jake Luzins had a double and RBI.
Phoenixville edged Westtown, 5-4, July 7 at the home diamond.
Bryan Furr and Dave Palmen combined on the pitching victory for a six-hitter. Furr hurled five-plus frames and allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) with one strikeout and four walks against the Express. Palmen earned the save with two innings of work in which he yielded two hits and two earned runs with two walks.
Phoenixville spotted the Express a 1-0 lead in the first innig but came back with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Westtown scored one in the top of the fifth and then two in the seventh to make the contest tight.
The A’s backed their pitchers by executing two double plays. Joe Little’s double ignited the fourth-inning rally, and Jordan Valenteen had a sacrifice bunt. Chris Kucewicz delivered a clutch two-run single.
Phoenixville divided a doubleheader against Lionville July 6 at home.
Lionville won the opener, 2-0, but Phoenixville rebounded with a 2-1 victory in game two.
Mike Anthony struck out 10 in the Phoenixville win and surrendered just six hits. Rob Purcell had an RBI single and also scored to lead the way at the plate for the Athletics while Luc Luttman scored the other run.
Cole Luzins pitched a complete game in the opener and scattered six hits. Austin Edgette hurled a two-hitter for the Hillcats.
