PHOENIXVILLE - Boyertown erupted for four runs in the first inning and then five more in the third to drub Phoenixville, 11-1, in a Twin County League contest Tuesday night at deSanno Field.
The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Ryan Weller pitched the first four innings for the Grizzlies and gave up two hits and no runs with three strikeouts and five walks. Pat Hohlfel relieved for one inning and gave up one hit and one run with one strikeout and one walk.
Owen Goryl took the loss for the Phantoms with relief help from Rich McGarry.
The Grizzlies avenged a 17-2 loss to Phoenixville last Wednesday at the Boyertown field.
J.T. Cooley and Weller paced a 13-hit Grizzlies onslaught. Cooley went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Weller finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Christian Wagner, Dave Terry and Mike Raineri each had two hits. Andrew Bauer also doubled for Boyertown.
Phoenixville scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chance DiFebbo, Goryl and Will Slover had hits for Phoenixville. Goryl singled home Phil Meszaros (three walks) with the Phantoms’ run with two outs in the fifth.
“They (Grizzlies) came to play tonight and we didn’t,” said Phoenixville manager Gene Bernat. “From the get-go, we didn’t have any snap tonight and we never recovered. You can’t come to play half-heartedly and expect to beat a decent team.
“Give all the credit to Boyertown. They hit the ball and they made the plays. Their first pitcher (Weller) pitched pretty well.”
