The Schuylkill River was fast, and so were Heart crew rowers, who turned in some of their best times this season at the fifth and final Manny Flick of the season.

The Novice 4X of Caroline Garvey, Kylie Van Luvender, Shannon Mulgrew and Avelina Gargano raced to a close fourth-place finish. The JV 2X of sophomore El Barton and junior Helena Brutschea powered to third place out of eight boats in the JV 2X and the LTWT 2X of Gigi Homan and Meg DiStefano finished sixth.

Closing the sunny afternoon for Heart Crew was the LTWT 4X of Cece Hess, hannah Bushner, Lindsay Johnson and Elise Brutschea, who kept their focus and held off the competition to finish in second place out of seven closely matched competitors.

With 587 boats from 86 high schools, this year’s 5th Manny Flick was bigger than last year’s Dad Vail, which had 560 boats competing.

The extra competition has helped the young Heart crew build power and confidence as it looks forward to the Philadelphai City Championships.
