Phoenixville tallied 11 points to finish in third place out of four teams at the 2013 Phoenixville Kiwanis Invitational Tennis Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, March 27-28, at the Legacy Tennis Center (formerly Arthur Ashe), which is located in the East Falls section of Philadelphia.
Parkland captured the tourney title with 19 points while North Penn came in second with 13 and West Chester East fourth with six markers.
This marked the 35th year of the tournament.
North Penn’s Mike Buxbaum defeated Parkland’s Egor Ivanow 6-4, 6-0 to win the singles championship for the fourth straight year. In 2012, Buxbaum won the District 1 singles title and placed second in the PIAA State Championships.
During the semifinals, Buxbaum beat Phoenixville’s Chris Walsh 6-1, 6-2, and Ivanow stopped Parkland’s Roshan Joshi 6-4, 6-4.
In the consolation singles finals, Parkland’s Nick Kshastri defeated Christian Aksu of West Chester East, 8-1.
Phoenixville’s Jeff Potts/Ryan Cadigan combined to win the “A” doubles title by beating Parkland’s Pete Harrison/Marcus Spieger 6-1, 6-4. In the third-place match, North Penn’s Sam Curlese/Dan Tsai defeated Gabe Flores/Jeevin Prabahaker, 9-7.
In the “B” doubles championship match, Parkland’s Nick Gothoskar/Nate Lyman downed Phoenixville’s Austin Starczewski/Mike Pinelli 6-2, 6-4.
In the third-place match, North Penn’s Howard Chu/Tim Doerr beat Phoenixville’s Pat Bowes/Josh Ziev, 8-2.
In the consolation doubles fray, Parkland’s Mike Adams/Donovan Snyder defeated Phoenixville’s Bobby Newman/Ben McKeon, 9-8 (7-2 tiebreaker).
After the first day of the tourney, Parkland had nine points, Phoenixville seven, North Penn six and West Chester East two. The Phantoms were in the hunt early due to strong doubles play.
