SCHUYLKILL TWP. —Bringing history to life is a challenge faced by school teachers every day. The students at Schuylkill Elementary recently had the opportunity to not only learn about the history of their school and the surrounding area, but to help create a visual reminder for many years to come. Every student participated in the creation of a mural titled, “The History of Schuylkill and Beyond,” which is now located in the gymnasium entrance lobby.

The project was the brain-child of Schuylkill Art Teacher, Beth Lees. Working with Carrie Kingsbury, a local mural artist, Lees was able to incorporate much of the history of Schuylkill Township, Phoenixville, and the original Schuylkill Elementary School. Students were involved in creating historical timelines and studying local history as well as creating additional art work to compliment the mural project.

The sepia colortones of the mural create a feeling it has been there forever. The pictures depict a simpler time, and remind all of us of the natural beauty of this area.

Lees organized a “Meet the Artist” night to introduce the school and local community to the mural. Describing it as a “working timeline,” she has helped create a lasting lesson.
