Phantoms win boys tennis opener

Phoenixville won its non-league boys tennis opener on Wednesday, March 13, by defeating Downingtown West, 5-2.

Karlyn Small and Chris Walsh earned singles victories for coach Leo Scoda’s Phantoms while Phoenixville also won at first, second and fourth doubles.

Small defeated Devin O’Brien 6-2, 6-1. Walsh stopped Devin Liu 6-1, 6-2.

At third singles, Phoenixville’s Luke Lombardi dropped a tough three-set match to Evan Hermans by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.

At first doubles, the Phantoms’ Jeff Potts/Ryan Cadigan bested Brock Hanak/Thoms Albed 6-0, 6-0. At second doubles, Bobby Newman/Ben McKeon prevailed over Nash Vadesh/John O’Brien 6-4, 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker). The fourth doubles tandem of Austin Starczewski/Nick Vaile outlasted Joe D’Ginto/Christian Flagg 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, in another difficult three-set encounter.

At third doubles, the Whippets’ Max Beneyie/Christian Abbonzio ruled over Zach Miller/Justin Wentz 6-2, 6-0.
