Boyertown's Wood leads PAC-10 wrestlers at states

HERSHEY - Boyertown freshman 220-pounder Jordan Wood captured a second-place silver medal during the PIAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey last weekend.

Wood dropped a 7-2 decision to Solanco’s three-time state champion, Thomas Haines, in the championship finals.

The 14-year-old Wood (46-2) fell to Haines (38-1) in a classic battle of top upperweights.

In the morning semifinals last Saturday, Wood defeated Pittsburgh Central Catholic junior Zach DeLucia, 7-4.

Also, Methacton junior Tracey Green (285) finished sixth, and Owen J. Roberts’ trio of sophomore Derek Gulotta (113), junior Colby Frank (126) and senior Gordon Bolig (182) helped give the PAC-10 five medalists out of nine entries at states.

Green ended the winter at 38-6 and became Methacton’s first state medalist in the heavyweight bracket.

Gulotta (40-9) had to settle for his second straight eighth-place finish. The Wildcat standout dominated in two victories but also dropped a two-point match in the quarterfinals and then a quick pin in the consolation quarterfinals forced him into the same position he was a year ago. Gulotta was edged by Chambersburg’s Tanner Shoap, 1-0, in his last match.

Frank (29-7) fell to Dallastown’s Rodney Sunday in the consolation quarterfinals, 4-3. Frank was pinned by Big Spring senior and Southcentral Region runner-up Dustin Rook in the seventh-place final.

Bolig (47-8) dropped three matches by identical 3-2 scores during his showing. His first came against eventual state champion Jacob Taylor of Bald Eagle Area in the quarterfinals; then to Martin Strenk of Delaware Valley in the consolation quarterfinals; and his third was to Alex DeCiantis of North Allegheny in the seventh-place final.
