Bears defeat PV in Final Four

BOYERTOWN - Perkiomen Valley enjoyed a successful baseball season in the Pioneer Athletic Conference.

However, in the PAC-10 Final Four playoffs Monday at Bear Stadium, the Vikings ran into host Boyertown and ace pitcher A.J. Bogucki. The result was a 6-0 Boyertown victory on a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts by Bogucki.

The Bears (12-6, 13-8) advanced into Wednesday night’s league championship game against Methacton, a 10-1 winner over Phoenixville in the other semifinal contest. The title game was played at Spring-Ford High School’s Ram Stadium.

Perkiomen Valley (12-6, 14-7) will now prepare for the District 1-AAAA playoffs next week.

Perkiomen Valley coach Ryan Hinkle thought the Vikings did not take advantage of some of the opportunities they had.

“They (Bears) played a nice little small ball game today,” said Hinkle. “Hats off to their bunting the ball. It is typical Boyertown baseball. We had opportunities, but things didn’t quite go our way. He (Bogucki) was hitting spots well. He threw a good game with 11 strikeouts. It is tough to win a game when you strike out 11 times.”

Jay Jabs and Jackson Martin roped doubles for the Vikes, who also got singles from Donovan Squartino and Brandon Pierce. Jabs, a lefty batter, doubled to right field to lead off the PV fourth inning. Martin, another lefty, cracked a double to right-center field to start the sixth.

Andrew Schuler pitched the first four innings in taking the loss. He allowed eight hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk. Jabs relieved for two innings and gave up one hit and one earned run with two strikeouts and one walk.

Boyertown led 1-0 after three innings before widening the gap with a three-spot in the fourth and then single tallies in the fifth and sixth.
