PHOENIXVILLE - Phoenixville’s girls basketball team began the 2012-13 campaign with a pair of losses in the George Rocco Tip-Off Classic in the new Phoenixville School District gymnasium last Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.
Phoenixville dropped the opener, 55-37, to Southern Lehigh from the Allentown area before falling to Council Rock North, 45-24, in the consolation game.
In the first game, Jada Boyce scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Phantoms. She hit five field goals and shot 2-for-3 at the free throw line. She also had one blocked shot and one steal.
Taylor Jefferis buried three second-half 3-point field goals to finish with nine points for coach Michele Dunleavy’s team. Aubree Flagg had six points, three rebounds and one steal while serving as the point guard in stead of her usual forward position.
Bailey Stover had five points and two steals with one trey in the first quarter. Nomi Washington had seven rebounds, three points and one steal. Annie Rubino chipped in with one field goal for two points.
Phoenixville shot 15-for-39 from the field and 3-for-13 at the free throw line. The Phantoms were also hurt by 27 turnovers.
For the Spartans, Madelene McDonald finished with 14 points and six rebounds. She made six field goals and shot 2-for-4 at the foul line. Julia Mayer had 11 points, Brianna Prince nine points and seven boards, Mady Campbell eight points, Melann Amory dropped two triples for six points. Sydney Cyr had four points and Kati Yext one trey for three markers.
Southern Lehigh shot 23-for-52 from the floor and 6-for-13 at the foul line. The Spartans committed 18 turnovers.
Phoenixville held a 31-25 advantage in rebounds.
The Phantoms played the season-opening contest without injured regulars in point guard Rachel Miller and another guard, Mary Sinnott.
Against the Indians, Flagg posted eight points, six rebounds, one steal and one block while Boyce totaled six pints, seven rebounds, one block and one steal.
The Phantoms shot 10-for-44 from the floor and 4-for-14 at the foul line. The Phantoms matched the Indians with 40 rebounds but were again hurt by turnovers.
Bailey Quinn had five rebounds and two points. Stover had two points and two steals. Washington and Rubino each had two points. Gabby Duda shot 2-for-6 at the foul line for two points. Freshman MacKenzie Smith grabbed four rebounds.
Sophomore guard Jessica Gerber scored 15 points for Council Rock North with two treys, 3-for-4 foul shooting, nine rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Michaela Finneyfrock finished with 10 points, one trey, eight steals and three boards. Junior guard Katie Budny had five points and five boards. Sophomore forward Krista Campbell shot 5-for-6 at the foul line for five points to go along with three boards and one steal. Sophomore forward Madison Attanasio had five points and four boards.
Natalie Guarna and Jules Singer each had two points for the Indians while Devon Mela had one point.
Council Rock North shot 15-for-48 from the field and 12-for-27 at the foul line with 24 turnovers.
Southern Lehigh edged Villa Joseph Marie, 50-46, in the championship game. McDonald, a junior guard, was named the tourney Most Valuable Player.
